Question 110. What reason was added to the second commandment to
enforce it more?
Answer. The reason added to enforce it more is contained in these
words: For I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the
fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that
hate me; and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my
commandments. This signifies the sovereignty of God over us, and the obedience
that is in us. God regards idolaters as spiritual adulterers, and manifests his
vengeful anger; regards the transgressors of this commandment as haters of him,
and threatens to punish them to many ages; and promises his mercy to all those
who love him and keep his commandments.
Deuteronomy 5:8-10 "You shall not make for
yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above,
or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You
shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous
God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and
fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to thousands of those
who love me and keep my commandments."
The worship of idols is expressed as spiritual
adultery. The relationship between God and the people of Israel is compared to
a married couple, and it is expressed that God is jealous because the people of
Israel worship idols.
Jeremiah 3:8-10 "Because backsliding Israel committed adultery, I
sent her away and gave her a certificate of divorce. Yet I have seen that her
treacherous sister Judah did not fear; she also went and played the harlot. She
played the harlot with stones and with wood, in a light way she defiled the
land. Yet in all this her treacherous sister Judah has not returned to me with
her heart, but has acted deceitfully," declares the LORD.
“I will punish the children for the sin of the fathers
to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.” The Hebrew translation of this is “I will punish the children for the sin of the
fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.” The sin is adultery, and it means the sin of
turning away from God in order to become like God. This is idolatry and greed.
“I show mercy to thousands of those
who love me and keep my commandments.” To love God means to become one with God. When the people realize
their sins in the law and confess that they are dead, becoming one with the
sacrifice, God embraces them. So they become one with God. The way to love God
is for the saints to become living spiritual sacrifices.
Romans 12:1-2 “Therefore I urge you,
brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,
holy and acceptable to God—your spiritual
worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Those who keep the commandments
keep them in their hearts so that they do not forget them, and they live
according to the word. In the case of the heavenly kingdom, the heavenly
kingdom is like a master putting a yoke on an ox, and it means that God ties a
rope to those who have become His people and pulls them. It means that they
will go together forever.
