Question 111. What is the third commandment?
Question 111. What
is the third commandment?
Answer. The third
commandment is, Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for
the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
The word “in vain” is usually
understood to mean that when a believer commits a wrong in the world, he or she
has defiled God’s name. However, the fundamental meaning is that
he or she is one who distorts God’s will.
The Hebrew word for vain is shabb, and it is
used to mean desolation, idolatry, worthless, and falsehood. When Jews say
something in the name of God, if they mix their own thoughts into their words,
they are misrepresenting God’s will, and therefore
it is false. If they say something contrary to God’s will, it is the same result as idolatry. God’s will is that all people in the world are sinners, and they can be
saved through the Messiah whom God sends. However, the Israelites believed in
God, but did not accept Jesus as the Messiah.
The name of Jehovah (Yahweh) is Jesus. In
Colossians 3:17, it says, “And whatever you do,
whether in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks to God the Father through him.” Here, regarding the
name of the Lord Jesus (en onomati kyuriou Jesus ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου Ἰησοῦ), it means “in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
In John 12:13, "They took branches of palm trees and went out to
meet him, shouting, 'Hosanna! Blessed is the King of Israel who comes in the
name of the Lord!'" The one who comes in the name of the Lord is Jesus. In
Lord (Curius), Curius is the Greek word, and in Hebrew it becomes Adonai.
Adonai began to be called Yahweh. Therefore, Lord (Curius) becomes Yahweh
(Jehovah), and the name of Jehovah is Jesus.
For the Israelites, taking the name of Jehovah in vain meant not
accepting the coming Messiah, Jesus. At the time of Jesus, the leaders and
people of Israel crucified Jesus on the cross for blasphemy. Likewise, those
today who say they believe in Jesus but do not enter into Jesus Christ are
taking God’s name in vain. In order to enter into Jesus
Christ, one must believe that he died with Jesus and was resurrected with Him.
Not those who believe in Jesus, but those who enter into Jesus Christ are those
who receive Jesus.
