Question 114. What reason is annexed to the third commandment?

Answer. The words, "I, the Lord, will not hold him guiltless that taketh my name in vain." The reason why these words are annexed to the third commandment is that God is the Lord, and the Lord our God, and we cannot blaspheme his name, or in any way abuse it. Although many who break this commandment may escape the censure and punishment of men, yet God will not tolerate the transgressors of this commandment, but will by no means suffer them to escape his righteous judgment.

Those who do not believe in Jesus and those who do not believe in what Jesus did are different. Those who do not believe in Jesus are sinners from birth. The third commandment is not for those who do not believe, but for the people of God who say they believe, the believers who say they believe in Jesus.

Those who do not believe in what Jesus did are selective in what Jesus said. They believe only what they think they can. They believe with a carnal mind.

Most believers today are legalists who repent of their sins every day and hope for forgiveness through the blood of Jesus, and they believe that when Jesus comes again, they will be divided into the resurrection of life and the resurrection of judgment, just as the sheep and goats are divided, and that such things will happen when they die. They do not think that they have already been forgiven of their sins by God and that they have already been judged.

The word judgment means punishment as a result of the judgment. Judgment is to punish those who do not enter into Jesus Christ as a result of the judgment. However, judgment is to judge whether there is sin or not. Most believers think of judgment as including judgment and punishment. They think that when Jesus comes again in the future, he will judge the sinners and the righteous, and if they are judged as sinners, they will go to hell. Most believers think that this will happen when the body dies. However, this is already happening while the body is alive.
