Question 118. Why were fathers and other superiors specifically commanded to keep the Sabbath?

Answer. The reason why the command was given to fathers and other superiors to keep the Sabbath was not only because they themselves had a duty to keep the Sabbath, but also because they had a duty to see that those under their control kept the Sabbath, and because their work often hindered those under them from keeping the Sabbath.

Jesus is not under the law, but is in the kingdom of God. Those who are united with Jesus are not under the law, but are resting in the kingdom of God. That is why the saints are said to be redeemed from the law. Those who are not redeemed from the law are still looking forward to rest. Those who are in the law are all sinners.

Since leaving God is sin, all humans have left God. They left God to become like God with their own strength. Likewise, those who try to fulfill the law with their own strength are under the law. Those who are under the law are those who have not entered the rest. Those who still believe that they must keep the Sabbath are those who are under the law.
