Question 124. Who are meant by parents in the fifth commandment?

Answer. Parents in the fifth commandment are meant not only by blood parents, but also by all superiors in age and gifts, and especially by God's ordinances, those who are in authority over us, whether in the family, church, or state.

If we translate the Hebrew Bible in Deuteronomy 5:16 again, it says, Obey the Lord your God, who has commanded you, just as your father and mother have commanded you…” The object of obedience is God. The content is that the saints are to obey their God as they would their earthly parents. Therefore, parents superficially refer to earthly parents, but strictly speaking, they can be seen as referring to the spiritual God. It is to look to God, the spiritual parent, through earthly parents.

Jesus told the parable of the prodigal son. The prodigal son regrets leaving his father's house and returns to his hometown as if he were dead. However, humans do not realize that they are beings who have left God. The prodigal son returned to his father's house. The father prepared a feast for the prodigal son who returned.

Salvation is returning to where we came from. When the prodigal son returned to his father's house, he returned as if he were dead. The saints must also die with Jesus and return. When the fleshly body (old man) dies, God will clothe us with a spiritual body. So, the spirit will be resurrected and return to God wearing a spiritual body. The subject of the return is the spirit. God is spirit, so those who are in God are also spirit.
