Question 126. What is
the general scope of the fifth commandment?
Answer. The general
scope of the fifth commandment is the performance of the duties which we owe
one to another in our mutual relations as inferiors, superiors, or equals.
Romans 12:1-2
“Therefore I
urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living
sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God—your spiritual
worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good,
pleasing and perfect will.”
Before
discerning the will of God, there is a passage that says, “Do not
conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of
your mind.” A believer cannot discern the will of the Lord without being
transformed. It is not something that can be accomplished by memorizing
passages. Also, before being transformed, the Bible first says, “Offer your
bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.”
On the day of
Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended like tongues of fire. They became one,
their fear disappeared, and they boldly preached the gospel. New believers want
to receive the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues.
The reason
the Holy Spirit descended strongly in the Bible is because of the preaching of
the gospel. However, without anyone saying anything, they laid all their
property at the apostle’s feet. This was done because the Holy Spirit of
God descended on them. It was because the saints wanted to meet each other’s needs.
However,
today, if this happens, it is almost considered heresy, and most people find
themselves bound to capitalist thinking. Reading the Bible and paying attention
is something I am interested in, and the reality is that I do not pay attention
to areas that I am not interested in.
There is only one
reason why a saint lives in this world. To seize the opportunity to fulfill the
Lord’s will. To seize the opportunity to have the Lord’s will fulfilled
through me. The death of the flesh means that this opportunity ends. No one
knows where we will end our lives. We must seize the opportunity to fulfill the
Lord’s will until the end. This is leading lost souls. The Apostle Paul
expressed that the spiritual sacrifice to God is evangelism. There can be no
true worship without preaching the gospel to lost souls. As we live, we realize
that we can discern what the Lord’s will is, but we cannot.
