Question 133. What is the reason annexed to the fifth commandment, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee?

Answer. The reason annexed to the fifth commandment, which is expressed in the words, That thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, is the express promise of long life and prosperity to all who keep this commandment, that they may be able to do for God's glory and their own good.

The fifth commandment is that God tells the Israelites to obey Him as they would their parents. At the time of the Exodus, they longed for Egypt and wanted to return. And when the commandments were written on two stone tablets, the people made a golden calf and worshiped it as an idol. God tells the people, You know how to serve your parents, but why dont you call me Father and obey me?

Obedience does not mean strictly keeping the law given by God, but it contains the meaning of discovering sin and discovering Christ who will come in the future while trying to keep the word. Discovering Christ is obeying the word of God. It means becoming one with the offering through the sacrificial offering and dying to sin.

God said that He would give life to those who obey His words, which is not the blessing of the world, but the life of heaven. Life means the life of resurrection. The life of resurrection will give the kingdom of God in their hearts while living in the world, and through that kingdom of God, they will worship God spiritually and be thankful for becoming Gods people. In Deuteronomy 31-34, Moses says to engrave Gods words in their hearts. Engraving Gods words in their hearts in the land of Moab means that the Israelites will obey God more and practice His love before entering the land of Canaan. In other words, it means that they will keep Gods commandments in their hearts and practice Gods will.

To engrave in your heart is to establish the kingdom of God in your heart. This is something that only those who have received resurrection life can know. It is the kingdom of God that only those who are born again of water and the Holy Spirit can establish. That kingdom is heaven, and it is Jesus Christ in your heart. This is the blessing that leads to eternal life. This is not a blessing of the world, but a blessing of the eternal kingdom of heaven.
