Question 136. What are the sins forbidden in the sixth commandment?
Question 136. What
are the sins forbidden in the sixth commandment?
Answer. The sins
forbidden in the sixth commandment are all actions which take away the life of
ourselves or others, except in the case of public judgment, lawful war, or in
self-defense; the neglecting or abstaining from the lawful and necessary means
of preserving life; sinful anger; hatred, jealousy, and desire of revenge; all
inordinate wrath, distracting cares, and intemperate use of meats and wines,
labor, and recreations; provoking words and pressures, quarrels, blows,
injuries, and whatsoever tends to destroy the life of man.
Matthew 5:21-22 “You have heard that it was said
to the ancients, ‘You shall not kill, and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.’ But I tell you that everyone who
is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment. Whoever says to his
brother, ‘Raca,’ will be liable to the Sanhedrin.
Whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to the hell of fire.”
"Do not kill" is said to the old man. Archaeois (ἀρχαίοις), translated as
old man, means first, leader (conductor). An example of the usage of the Greek
word arche is in John 1:1, "In the beginning (arche) was the Word, and the
Word was with God, and the Word was God." The word translated as the
beginning means the head of the temple (Christ). Therefore, the old man is the
first man, Christ, and through the first man, male and female humans will be
born into the world in the future, and it is telling them not to oppose God.
The first man
was God who appeared in the form of a sinner who had to die, and God caused the
first man to die. He made the first man Adam fall asleep (die), took out his
rib and made a woman, and made the remaining body a man. That is why all people
in the world have sinful bodies. Since God confines the spirit in the body,
those who are born into the world are spiritually killed.
The words, “Do not kill,” mean that God died through the first man, and
those who are born after the first man are also spiritually killed, but he will
no longer judge those who enter into Christ. That is why Jesus said that
everything was accomplished when he died on the cross.
John 19:28-30 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished,
said, (that the Scripture might be fulfilled) "I thirst." A jar full
of sour wine was there, so they filled a sponge with the sour wine and put it
on a branch of hyssop and held it to Jesus' mouth. When Jesus had received the
sour wine, he said, "It is finished." And he bowed his head and gave
up his spirit.
"You have heard that it was said, 'And whoever kills will be
subject to judgment.'" It is mentioned in Exodus 20:13 and Deuteronomy
5:17. This is what God said to those under the law. They are already spiritual
murderers. Therefore, it says that those under the law are judged. Since they
have been judged, they are bound under the law. Through the outward prohibition
of physical murder, God is speaking to the people who commit spiritual murder
under the law.
"But I
tell you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to
judgment." Brother refers to a brother in Christ. God raised spiritually
those who died with Jesus and established them as holy, so if a brother is
angry with his brother, it means that he is sitting in the place of God.
The word Raka
(ῥακά) is a curse
word meaning a fool, a stupid person, a fool. Jesus explains about those who
will be judged. If a person commits murder, he will be judged, and if a
believer interferes with the work of saving the spirit, just as he does with
physical murder, he becomes a murderer. He says that those who interfere with
the work of saving the spirit will be judged.
Brothers are
those who are one in Christ. However, if brothers who should be one in Christ
become angry and criticize each other due to conflict between them, they will
end up attacking the spirit in Christ and will end up committing spiritual
murder. Those who are born again are spiritual beings. If a spiritual being
criticizes another spiritual being, it can be disrespectful to God. That is why
we are told to be reconciled with our brothers. That is why Jesus repeatedly
told us to love our brothers. Brothers emphasize spiritual brothers. They are
beings who become one in the kingdom of God.
Matthew
5:23-24 “Therefore
if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your
brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar.
First go and be reconciled to your brother; and then come and offer your gift.”
It is said
that brotherhood and love come before sacrifice (worship). The word
reconciliation means the reconciliation between God and sinners. At the center
of it all is Jesus Christ. Just as we are reconciled with God through the cross
of Jesus Christ, saints must also love their spiritual brothers in Christ.
Saints must forgive their
spiritual brothers even if they are wrong. Forgiveness is a very difficult
thing. In particular, we usually do not forgive those who have caused us
failure, pain, and hurt in our lives, but only think about revenge. If we do
not forgive, we will rise to the position of judge. In the end, it means,
"We will rise to the position where we want to be like God." Jesus
sends us to revive the dead spirit, and in the end, God sends the saints as His
spokesman to forgive.
