Question 139. What are the sins forbidden in the seventh commandment?
Answer. The sins forbidden in the seventh commandment are, besides the neglect
of the duties required, adultery, fornication, rape, incest, sodomy, all
unnatural lusts, all filthy imaginations, thoughts, and affections; all corrupt
or filthy correspondence, or listening thereto; lewd looks, impudent and
frivolous actions, and vulgar and indecent apparel; also the prohibition of
lawful marriage, and the entering into of unlawful marriage, and the allowing,
tolerating, managing, and adultery of the heart; also entering into vows of celibacy,
and unjustly delaying marriage, and unjustly divorce or desertion; also
idleness, gluttony, drunkenness, and associating with filthy companions;
enjoying filthy songs, books, dances, and plays; and all provoking to
filthiness, or doing filthy acts, either to ourselves or to others.
In Mark 10:1-5, “Jesus left there and went to the region of Judea
and across the Jordan. The crowds gathered around him again, and he was
teaching them again as he usually did. The Pharisees came to him and tested him
with this question, “Is
it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” He answered them, “What command did Moses give you?” They said to him, “Moses permitted her to write a certificate of
divorce and send her away.” But
Jesus said to them, “Because
of your hardness of heart we wrote you this commandment.”
It is said that Moses gave a
certificate of divorce to all the stubborn people who wanted a divorce.
Basically, all people are stubborn people who have committed spiritual
adultery. In Matthew 10:11-12, "He said, 'Whoever divorces his wife and
marries another commits adultery against her, and if she divorces her husband
and marries another, she commits adultery.'" However, if you have Moses'
certificate of divorce, you can remarry without committing adultery. What does
Moses' certificate of divorce mean spiritually?
Romans 7:2-3, "For a married woman
is bound by law to her husband while he lives. But if her husband dies, she is
released from the law of her husband. Therefore, if while her husband lives,
she marries another man, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies,
she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress even though she marries
another man." Here, a certificate of divorce means the death of a husband.
In Galatians 4:29-30, a comparison is made between
those under the law and those under the promise: "But as at that time he
who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to
the Spirit, so it is also now. But what does the Scripture say? Cast out the
slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not be heir with
the son of the free woman."
The one born of the law refers to the fleshly self
(Ishmael), and the one born of the Spirit refers to the spiritual self (Isaac).
The fleshly self born of the flesh persecutes the spiritual self born of the
Spirit. That is why the spiritual self cannot appear in the human heart, and
the fleshly self reigns. However, it is said to cast out the fleshly self. The
way to cast out the fleshly self is to have a certificate of divorce.
The divorce certificate Moses gave was the death of
Jesus Christ on the cross. To receive this certificate is to be united with
Jesus who died on the cross. Carrying one's own cross is the only way to cast
out the fleshly self. The only way to be free from the law is through the death
of the cross. Saying that you have received the Holy Spirit while not dying to
the law on the cross is spiritual adultery. It is calling someone who says that
they have received the Holy Spirit while being bound by the law a prostitute.
Romans 8:5 says, "For those who
are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh; but
those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit." Those
who are according to the flesh refer to their physical self, and those who are
according to the Spirit refer to their spiritual self. These two are not
separate people, but they appear in the same person's soul. Therefore, it is
said to fight and win the victory. The fight between the two ends with the
death of the cross. And the result of the war is the fruit of resurrection. If
you receive Moses' certificate of divorce (the death of the cross), you can
officially get married again. This is being united with the resurrected Christ.
The wedding feast in heaven will take place. Those who do not believe in the
present resurrection are still fighting.
