Question 141. What are the duties required in the eighth commandment?
Answer. The duties required in the eighth commandment are truth,
faithfulness, and justice in contracts and transactions between man and man;
giving to every man his due; making restitution of things unlawfully taken from
their rightful owners; freely giving and borrowing according to our ability and
the necessities of others; temperance in our judgment, will, and affections
concerning the things of this world; careful consideration and study to obtain,
keep, use, and dispose of those things which are necessary and convenient for
our sustenance, and fit for our condition; avoiding unnecessary lawsuits,
sureties, and the like; and endeavoring by all just and lawful means and
methods to obtain, preserve, and increase the wealth and outward estate of
others as well as our own.
Romans 12:1, “I urge you therefore, brothers, by
the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and
acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
Stealing from God is not offering what should be offered to God.
Offering is offering oneself, dying with Jesus Christ. Offering the body to God
is destroying the body before God. Offering to God is being set apart. Set
apart is being made holy before God.
When a believer believes
and confesses that he or she died on the cross with Jesus just as Jesus died on
the cross, God sends the Holy Spirit and causes him or her to be born as a holy
person.
