Question 145. What are the sins forbidden in the ninth commandment?

Answer. The sins forbidden in the ninth commandment are all things which do injure the truth and good name of our neighbor as well as our own, especially in public judgments: giving false witness, giving perjury, willfully coming forward to defend an evil cause, turning away and suppressing the truth, passing unjust judgments, calling the evil good and the good evil, rewarding the wicked according to the works of the just, and the righteous according to the works of the wicked. Also, forging documents, concealing the truth, and keeping unjust silence in the face of just proceedings; remaining silent when wrongdoing calls for reproof from ourselves and an appeal from others; speaking the truth unreasonably, or maliciously for a wrong purpose, or perverting it in a false sense, or in dubious and ambiguous expressions, to the prejudice of truth and justice, speaking untruths, lying, slandering, backbiting, and defaming. It is slandering, gossiping, cynical, abusive, impatient, harsh, partial, accusing, unrighteous intentions, words, and actions, flattery, vanity, over- or under-estimating ourselves or others, denying the gifts and grace of God, aggravating little faults, and concealing, excusing, or minimizing sins when called to confess them freely. It is also useless searching for the weaknesses of others, spreading false reports, receiving and sympathizing with evil reports, closing our ears to fair defense, harboring evil suspicions, being jealous or grieved at any man's worthy faith, seeking or hoping to injure it, rejoicing at their dishonor and scandal, mocking contempt and foolish praise, breaking legitimate promises, neglecting things of good report, and doing and not avoiding, or preventing others from doing, things that bring about a false reputation, which we can do.

1 Samuel 12:23 "God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you; I will instruct you in the good and right way." Not praying is also a sin. Prayer is a means of communication between God and believers, and if believers stop praying, they cannot receive God's teachings.

Romans 8:12-13 "Therefore, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." As the Apostle Paul said, we must remember that in our flesh we die daily, and that in our spirit we are beings who have been made alive as new creatures.

When a believer falls into the fleshly mind, the Spirit intercedes for him with groans that words cannot express. Romans 8:26-27 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Also, for believers who are overconfident, God can send Satan to prick them with a thorn. 2 Corinthians 12:7, And to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, to keep me from becoming conceited.
