Question 153. What does God require of us to escape the wrath and curse of God due to us for the transgression of the law?
Answer. To escape the wrath
and curse of God due to us for the transgression of the law, God requires of us
repentance toward him, faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ, and the diligent use
of the outward means whereby Christ communicates to us the benefits of his
mediation.
Romans 6:4-6 “Therefore we were buried with him through baptism into
death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of
the Father, we too should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united
with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be in a resurrection like
his. Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of
sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.”
God tells sinners to repent
and come into the atoning death of Jesus Christ. Repentance is the death of the
old man. When a believer realizes that he came into the world against God and
turns back, he realizes that he has inherited the body of sin of the old man
and believes that the old man died with Jesus. This is repentance.
Baptism is a union with the
death and resurrection of Jesus. So ultimately, believers also receive God's
judgment on the cross with Jesus and are saved through Jesus' resurrection.
Resurrection is not the
concept of the body dying and then coming back to life, but the spirit that
died is resurrected and comes back to life, and is given a spiritual body and
is seated in heaven. Therefore, a temple is established in the hearts of the
saints, and when Jesus comes again and enters that temple, that temple becomes
heaven. Thus, the image of God is restored. This is called the restoration of
Eden.
