Question 155. How does the Word become effectual to salvation?

Answer. The Spirit of God, by the reading, and especially the preaching, of the Word, enlightens, convinces, and humbles sinners, drives them out of themselves, and draws them to Christ; conforms them to his image, and makes them obedient to his will; strengthens them against temptations and corruptions, establishes them by grace, and establishes their hearts in holiness and comfort through saving faith.

Galatians 3:23-27 "Before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept until the faith which would be revealed. So the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ."

The word of God is divided into the law and the gospel. The law is the word of God to sinners, telling them to repent, turn back, and find Christ. However, the gospel is about putting on Christ, and it tells us that the saints in Christ have received the resurrection life and are seated in heaven.

The gospel is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on the cross. In order for this death and resurrection of the cross to be applied to the saints, they must be united with Jesus. They must believe that they died with Jesus and were resurrected together. This faith is not a faith that comes from the law, but a faith that comes from heaven.

In order to have this faith, the believer must realize why he or she must die to God. It does not mean that he or she is saved simply by believing in Jesus, but that he or she is the spirit of an angel who sinned in the kingdom of God because he or she wanted to be like God, and repents to God. That is why the believer cries out to God. This is prayer. Then, God takes pity on him or her and saves the believer through the grace of Jesus Christs atonement. Salvation is receiving the life of resurrection and allowing the kingdom of God to come into the believers heart. This is resurrection.
