Question 157. How should we read the Word of God?
Question 157. How
should we read the Word of God?
Answer. The Bible
should be read with a high and reverent heart. That is, with a firm belief that
the Bible is the Word of God and that only God can help us understand the
Bible, we should read it diligently with a desire to know, believe, and obey
the will of God revealed in it. Also, we should read the Bible with attention
to the content and scope of the Bible, meditating on it, applying it, denying
ourselves, and praying.
Hebrews 4:12-13
For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any double-edged
sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow,
and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is
hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid bare to the eyes of
him to whom we must give account.
The reason for reading the word of God through the Bible is to know
God's will, and those who read to know God's will are those who are interested
in the kingdom of God. Those who are interested in the kingdom of God do not
read the Bible from a worldly perspective, but from the perspective of the
kingdom of God. If one reads the Bible from a worldly perspective, he is no
different from a religious person who has a superstitious faith.
From the perspective of the kingdom of God, the Bible is the gospel
about Jesus Christ. At the center of the gospel is the death and resurrection
of the cross. The fleshly thoughts that the flesh desires are directed against
the kingdom of God, while the spiritual thoughts that the spirit desires are
directed toward the kingdom of God. The death of the cross is the death of the
fleshly body (the body of sin), and the resurrection is the birth of the
spiritual body.
The Word of God divides the flesh and spirit of the saints who are
aiming for the kingdom of God. Psyche is translated as soul, which means
physical life. It separates the physical life and spirit. And it separates the
joints and the marrow. The joints are made up of cartilage, ligaments, etc.
that connect the bones. The marrow is a mesh-like tissue that organizes the inside
of the bone. If these two are separated, the functions of the flesh are
paralyzed. Ultimately, the Word of God kills the life of the flesh and gives
new heavenly life.
Depending on how the believer reads the Word of God, it is determined
whether he or she will go to the life of the flesh or to the life of heaven. In
order to become the Word that leads to the life of heaven, the believer must be
faithful to the original language that God originally gave. Since the
translations into each language have many errors, the errors must be corrected
through the original language of the Bible. This is the work that the pastors
of the church community must do.
