Question 170. How do the worthy partakers of the Lord's Supper eat the body and blood of Christ?

Answer. The body and blood of Christ are not corporally present in or under the bread and wine of the Lord's Supper; but they are spiritually present to those who receive them by faith, and this does not depend on the outward senses. Therefore, those who worthily partake of the Lord's Supper do not eat the body and blood of Christ corporally, but spiritually; yet they truly receive and apply to themselves by faith the crucified Christ and all the benefits of his death.

Breaking bread and drinking wine symbolizes the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on the cross. First, breaking bread means that Jesus Christ's flesh was torn in death on the cross, and the believer's flesh was also torn with Jesus. And eating bread means that the believer believes that he is also resurrected by being united with the flesh of the resurrected Jesus Christ.

Pouring the cup symbolizes the blood that Jesus Christ shed on the cross to atone for sins, and the saints also shed blood by dying on the cross with Jesus. Lifting the cup symbolizes the Holy Spirit, the water of life of Jesus Christ, and the saints also receive the Holy Spirit, the water of eternal life.

John 7:38-39 He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, Out of his belly will flow rivers of living water.’” But this he said of the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive (for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified). The saints must understand this meaning of the Lords Supper and participate in it. Otherwise, they will end up drinking sin.
