Question 171. What preparations must those who wish to receive the sacrament of the Lord's Supper make before they come to the Lord's Supper?
Answer. Those who wish to receive
the sacrament of the Lord's Supper must prepare themselves for it. First, they
must examine whether they are in Christ. They must feel their sins and
shortcomings, examine their knowledge, faith, and repentance of the truth, and
examine whether they have love for God and their brethren, and love for all
men. They must forgive those who have wronged them, and renew their hearts to
love Christ and to renew their obedience, and they must prepare themselves for
the Lord's Supper by meditating together and praying fervently.
Those who wish to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist must examine themselves
before participating in the Eucharist to see if they are dead to the world, to
sin, and to the law. This is because only those who are dead to the world, to
sin, and to the law can receive the Holy Spirit. In other words, the saints who
participate in the Eucharist are those who have received the baptism of the
Holy Spirit.
Those who have been baptized but still love the
world are like the Israelites who missed Egypt on their way out of Egypt and
wanted to return.
Those who have not died to sin are still in sin.
Romans 6:6-7 "For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that
the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to
sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin."
Those who do not die to the law are still legalists. They believe in
the gospel, but they also try to keep the law. The Bible says that these people
are spiritual adulterers.
Those who are not
dead to the world, to sin, and to the law are those who are not in the spirit
but in the flesh. Even if believers are baptized, these believers are those who
have failed Satan's test and are not qualified to participate in the Eucharist.
Those who can participate in the Eucharist are those who have received the
baptism of the Holy Spirit and are guided by the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:9-10
"But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of
God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does
not belong to Christ. And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin,
but the Spirit is life because of righteousness."
