Question 174. What is required of those who receive the sacrament at the time of the administration of the Lord's Supper?
Answer. It is required of
those who receive the sacrament at the time of the administration of the Lord's
Supper, that they look to God in that ordinance with all holy reverence and
care; that they diligently observe the elements and acts of the sacrament, and
carefully discern the Lord's body, and lovingly meditate on his death and
sufferings, so that the work of grace may be strongly manifested in them; that
they may examine themselves, be sorry for their sins, and long earnestly for
Christ, and feed upon him by faith, as they hunger and thirst, and receive his
fulness, and rely on his merits, and rejoice in his love, and be thankful for
his grace; and so renew their covenant with God, and their love to all the
saints.
Colossians 3:1-3 “If then you have been
raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at
the right hand of God. Set your mind on things that are above, not on things
that are on the earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ
in God.” Those who have been raised with Christ have received resurrection life
and become new creations. Resurrection is not the concept of the body dying and
coming back to life, nor is it the concept of having a change of heart. Resurrection
life is about the spirit.
Those who participate in the Eucharist must think that they are seated
in heaven, hidden in God, and have citizenship in heaven. Ephesians 2:6 “And raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places
in Christ Jesus.” Heaven (ton uranon) refers to the kingdom of
God in the soul. In the Gospel of Matthew, heaven is expressed as heaven.
Matthew 3:2 says, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven (he basileia
ton uranon) is at hand.”
Philippians 3:20 “But our citizenship is in heaven,
and from it we eagerly await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” This means that although our
bodies live on earth, our spiritual identity is in heaven.
