Question 195. What do we pray for in the sixth petition?

Answer. The sixth petition is, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. In this petition we acknowledge that God, who is most wise, righteous, and gracious, is able to govern all things, that for many holy and righteous purposes we are tempted, and fail, and for a time are caught in temptation, and that Satan, the world, and the flesh powerfully lead us astray, and ensnare us; and that after the forgiveness of sins, we are not only tempted by our own corruption, weakness, and carelessness, but also give ourselves up to temptation, and at the same time have neither the strength nor the will to resist, escape, or repent of temptation, and that we ought to be left under such power. But even in these trials, we pray that God governs the world and all things in it, controls the flesh, subdues Satan, governs all things, gives all means of grace, blesses us, renews us, and uses the means of grace carefully so that we and all God's people may not be tempted to sin by God's providence. If we are tempted, may He strongly uphold us with His Spirit when we are tempted, so that we may stand, and if we fall, may He raise us up again and restore us, so that He may use and utilize the trials holy and perfect our sanctification and salvation, so that Satan may be trampled under our feet and we may be completely and forever free from sin, temptation, and all evil.

There are two cases where God uses Satan to test. The first is the test after the believer receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Jesus was also tested by Satan after being baptized. It is a test of legalism, humanism (faith in ups and downs), and gnosticism. God gives faith to the believer who passes this.

The second is the thorn of Satan that falls on the saints. When the saints fight against the flesh and continue to fall, the thorn is given through Satan. Paul also asked for a way to escape the thorn three times, but God turned away.

The way to be saved from evil is to pray that you can win the battle of the flesh. Evil is the greed to become like God, and this is the mind of the flesh. Romans 8:6-8 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace. Because the mind set on the flesh is hostile to God. It does not submit to Gods law, nor indeed can it. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

So Paul urges us to fight against the flesh and win. Romans 8:12-13 "Therefore, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live."
