Question 31. With whom was the covenant of grace made?
Question 31. With
whom was the covenant of grace made?
Answer. The
covenant of grace was made with Christ, the second Adam, and in him with all
the elect, his descendants.
The
covenant in the Bible is a promise between God and man. God unilaterally made a
covenant with man and made him obey. However, because man disobeyed, the
previous covenant was nullified, and a new covenant was made with the new man.
Therefore, the covenant God made with the previous man is called the old
covenant, and the covenant made with the new man is called the new covenant.
Jesus died on
the cross, was resurrected, and ascended to heaven. The night before he was
crucified, Jesus spoke of the new covenant. After breaking the bread, he said, “This cup is
the new covenant in blood.” Those who are in Jesus Christ become
participants in the new covenant. Those who are in Jesus Christ are those who
are buried with Jesus, who died on the cross. They believe that Jesus died for
their sins and accept that His death is their death. Therefore, the saints
represent those who are dead to the law (Galatians 2:19), to sin (Romans 6:2),
and to the world (Galatians 6:14).
Romans 6:3 also says, “Or do you not know that all of us who have been
baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?” Being united
with Jesus’ death is participating in the new covenant. In other words, those who
are born again participate in the new covenant. Therefore, those who are born
again are justified by faith. Not everyone is born again by believing in Jesus,
but those who are united with Jesus’ death are reborn.
Therefore,
saints participate in the new covenant. Romans 6:7 says, “For he who
has died has been freed from sin and justified.” Therefore,
the words of Romans 8:1 apply. “Therefore, there is now no condemnation to those
who are in Christ Jesus.” This is the fulfillment of the covenant.
Because the covenant is fulfilled, it becomes a covenant of grace.
