Question 66. What is the union of the elect with Christ?

Answer. The union of the elect with Christ is a work of God's grace, whereby they are spiritually, mystically, truly and inseparably joined to Christ as their Head and Husband. This is accomplished in their effectual calling.

The elect are not united with Christ, but are chosen by being united with Christ. Romans 6:4-5 says, "Therefore we were buried with him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we too should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in the likeness of his death, certainly we will also be in the likeness of his resurrection."

Union with Christ is union with the death of the cross, which the saints accept by faith. It is believing that I am a being who cannot help but die to God, and that I repent and enter into His death. Believing means becoming one.

When the believer becomes one with Jesus who died on the cross, God makes him one with the resurrected Jesus, and the believer also participates in the resurrection. That is why he becomes one of the chosen ones, and the Holy Spirit guarantees the believer through the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
