Question 67. What is effectual calling?

Answer. Effectual calling is the work of God's almighty power and grace, whereby (as a special love freely bestowed upon his elect, and nothing in them moved him to do it) he doth, in his acceptable time, by his word and spirit, call them unto Jesus Christ, enlighten their hearts by his Holy Spirit, and make them conscious of salvation; and renew and resolve their wills, so that (though they themselves be dead in sins) they willingly respond to his call, and receive the grace offered and communicated in it.

All people living in this world were originally beings with the spirits of angels of the kingdom of God. However, because their spirits were imprisoned in their flesh, they forgot God and came to oppose Him. So God calls all people in the world. Matthew 22:9-10 "Go therefore into the highways and invite to the wedding feast all whom you find." So the servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad. So the wedding feast was filled with guests. "The king sent out invitations to people to throw a feast for his son, but when no one came, he ordered his servants to bring anyone they could.

But when the king came to the banquet hall, he saw someone who was not wearing a wedding garment, and he threw him into the darkness. It is said that many are called, but few are chosen. There are two kinds of election. It means that there are those whom God chose before the creation of the world. They are people like Jesus' disciples. This is entirely God's will and grace. However, those who are thrown into the world and are chosen as God's people mean those who enter Christ. This is because Christ was determined before the creation of the world and is accomplished according to a predetermined plan.

Before Jesus came, they were those who looked forward to the coming Christ with faith, at the time of Jesus, they were those who believed in Jesus as Christ, and those living in this day and age are those who are saved through repentance and faith by being united with Jesus who died on the cross and was resurrected. They are those who enter into Christ.
