Question 74. What is adoption?
Question 74. What is
adoption?
Answer. Adoption is
an act of God's free grace, in and for his only begotten Son Jesus Christ,
whereby all those who are justified are received into the number of the
children of God, have his name put upon them, have the Spirit of his Son given
to them, are under his heavenly Father's care and government, have all the
privileges of the sons of God, and are made heirs of all the promises, and
joint-heirs with Christ in glory.
Galatians 4:4-7 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent
forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were
under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are
sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir
through God.
Huiodesian means
adoption, acceptance as a son, etc. The reason God made the Son of God under
the law was to be a sacrificial offering according to the law. In other words,
Jesus came to the world as a sacrifice of atonement to free those under the law
from sin. Jesus is not under the law, and although he is the Son of God, the
reason he became the Son of Man is for atonement.
Since all people
inherited a sinful body from the first man, they cannot be free from sin as
long as they have a sinful body. However, Jesus was without sin, so he could
become a sacrificial offering. In the Old Testament, sacrifices had to be
without blemish and spotless in order for the sinner's sins to be forgiven.
Hebrews 9:23 "It was necessary therefore that the copies of the things in
the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves
with better sacrifices than these."
So the believer is also united with the best sacrifice, and the body of
the believer's flesh also dies. This becomes a spiritual living sacrifice.
Romans 12:1-2 "Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to
present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is
your spiritual worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed
by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what
God's will is—his good, acceptable and perfect will."
Through the
redemption of Jesus Christ, sinners have obtained the right to be sons, but to
be formally acknowledged as sons, they must receive the seal of testimony by
the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:15-16 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery
to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons,
by whom we cry, “Abba, Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children
of God. The Holy Spirit testifies that the saints are sons of God.
This is the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The baptism of the Holy Spirit
means the consciousness of becoming a son of God. Baptism is a consciousness of
believing that the fleshly body received from earthly parents dies and that one
is born again from the heavenly Father.
When a saint becomes a son of God, Romans 8:17 says, "And if
children, then heirs; heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, provided we
suffer with him in order that we may also share in his glory." Suffering
refers to the difficulties we face while spreading the gospel.
