Question 76. What is repentance unto life?
Question 76. What is repentance unto life?
Answer. Repentance unto life is the grace of salvation that is brought
about in the heart of a sinner by the Holy Spirit and Word of God. As a result,
he sees and feels the danger, filthiness, and ugliness of his sin, and repents
of it. Therefore, he realizes the mercy of God given in Christ, and deeply
grieves and hates his sin, so that he turns away from all his sins and turns to
God, and in all things he becomes obedient and makes the purpose and effort to
walk with God without ceasing.
According to the doctrine, repentance means turning away from sin with
all one's being, seeing and feeling the danger, filthiness and ugliness of
one's sin, repenting and making a continual effort to turn away from sin.
Church people often
understand the phrase “repent” as “repent for a mistake, confess, and
ask for forgiveness.”
When a believer does something that is not right in the eyes of God, or does
something bad to another person, or does something that others would point
fingers at as a child of God, he or she comes to church, repents of that
action, and asks God to forgive him or her.
Jesus said to the people of
Israel, “Repent.” If they understand the meaning of
Jesus’
“Repent” as repenting for a mistake,
confessing, and asking for forgiveness, then they have misunderstood the Bible.
Sin means leaving God.
Leaving God and judging good and evil on your own, or thinking of achieving
righteousness by the standards of the law without God, is sin itself.
Therefore, thinking like this is wrong, so the word “repent” is to tell you not to do it on
your own but to return to God.
Even today, there are still many
who judge themselves by the law. The problem of sin is solved if we are in
Jesus Christ. The word “repent” means “to reconsider, to regret, to
change direction and return.” “When Jesus told the Israelites to repent,” he meant to give up trying to achieve righteousness by
diligently keeping the law and meet Christ. In other words, he told them to
return to God. He told them to give up trying to achieve righteousness by
themselves and return to Christ.
