Question 98. Where is the moral law summarized and contained?

Answer. The moral law is summarized and contained in the Ten Commandments, which were spoken by God's voice on Mount Sinai and written by Himself on two stone tablets, and are recorded in Exodus 20. The first four commandments contain our duty to God, and the remaining six contain our duty to man.

The two stone tablets on which the moral law was inscribed as commandments were carved in two stages.

The first two stone tablets were made by God Himself and given to Moses, but the second two stone tablets had to be made by Moses. The first stone tablets showed what Gods people had to keep and do, but the second stone tablets were for the people to engrave in their hearts and think about and practice Gods will.

The first and second stone tablets are like the first man Adam and the last man Adam. The first man Adam was given a body of sin, and the second man Adam was given a body of spirit. Therefore, the second stone tablet is like a temple built in the hearts of the saints. The first stone tablet is broken (dies), and the second two stone tablets are newly engraved (reborn) and placed in the Ark of the Covenant (in the temple in the hearts of the saints).

Psalm 40:8, I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart. The second stone tablet is within my heart.

The second stone tablet is the new law, those who are under the law of Christ. In 1 Corinthians 9:21, it says, "To those who are without law I became as without law (though I am not without law to God, but under the law of Christ), so that I might win those who are without law."

The first two stone tablets were given, and it was shown through the incident of the golden calf that humans could not keep them. However, in the midst of them, Gods mercy and compassion overflowed. That is the second two stone tablets. Therefore, the name of Jehovah is proclaimed along with the second two stone tablets.

The first stone tablet is about the first man, Adam, and sin, while the second stone tablet is about the last man, Adam, and grace. The first stone tablet is about the death of the cross, while the second stone tablet is about the resurrection. In John 1:17, it says, "For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."

In conclusion, regarding the content of the commandments called moral law, the first one is engraved on stone tablets and forced to be followed, but the second one is engraved in the heart through the stone tablets and to discern God's will and act accordingly. The meaning of keeping the second commandment of the two stone tablets is to engrave it in the heart.
